The video game world is filled with lots of characters. We have the heroes, the major villains, and the ones all in between. In horror games, monsters and figures will scare you away from the controller. Today, we look at some of the most creepy ones in the form of small stories. So get behind the covers, and let’s face these creeps.
The Wumpus
Hunt the Wumpus
You explore tunnels in the cave near your house. You want to push the limits of the unknown and discover new unexplored areas. Maybe you’ll find some treasure or some deep, dark secret? Instead, you come face to face with a monster that has one thing on its mind - eating you. The wumpus has sharp teeth and a roar to scare and intimidate you. Exploring that cave wasn’t such a good idea, was it? You begin to run with fear and anxiety, making you stumble a couple of times. Is it behind you? No. You actually can make it out. As you reach the cave entrance, the roar hits your ears again. You fall and cover your ears. There it is. Standing at the cave entrance, slobbering and looking right at you.
Shy Guy
Super Mario
You’re alone, camera in hand, as you explore another abandoned factory for your Urbex channel. You’re brave, used to disturbing sounds, and even encountered unsavory people. You think everything is going okay, but then you hear footsteps. You know it’s unsafe to check out, but it’s good content for the channel. You creep upstairs, whispering to the camera, and now and then yell, “Hello?”. Then, you see him. Wearing a white mask with no eyes, in a red outfit - a small figure. It looks at you. However, it seems more scared of you. It holds up its hands, scared. It’s shy. You approach offering kindness by explaining that this is for your YouTube channel. Then, as it seems to warm up to you, you reach and take the mask off. What you see before you is a void of darkness. There is nothing. The shy guy then grabs you, and there’s no escape. No followers to help. Maybe the cameraman doesn’t always survive.
Pyramid Head
Silent Hill
You find yourself in a mysterious town, looking for answers. Your wife is dead, or so you thought. You received a mysterious letter, signed by her, asking you to come to a place named Silent Hill. It’s been one hell of an experience with fog, lots of bugs, and what have to be some of the worst nurses you’ve seen. Thinking you have found a safe spot, you explore a building and find what seems to be traces of your wife. Then, you hear an elevator door open. Startled, you turn and flash your flashlight to the door. Out walks what can only be described as a monstrous freak. It’s bulky, with no shirt on. It holds what’s got to be the biggest damn sword you’ve seen in your life. Last but not least, there’s no head or face - just a colossal steel pyramid. There was no sound and seemingly no purpose, only strolling towards you. You have a gun and immediately start shooting, looking to protect yourself. It’s no use. The disturbing being keeps walking, and eventually, you have nowhere to go as you back up to a wall. Pyramid Head grabs you by the throat and begins to squeeze.
Faz Bear
Five Night’s at Freddy’s
Congratulations! You got a new job doing night shift security for the popular local pizzeria. You’ve been warned to keep an eye, especially on the kids’s animatronics, particularly the mascot Faz Bear. They are kind of creepy, but you know you’re just freaking yourself out anyway. As the hours pass, everything goes great. You eat lunch, but you see it in the camera when you return. The animatronics are gone. You rationalize to yourself multiple reasons why this is normal. You hear the air shaft rattle with sounds as if someone is crawling through. You listen to what sounds like giggling. You look up and see a red light in the doorway. Panic sets in. You shut the door and begin to fumble for your phone. Then, the door slams open, and you can’t believe your eyes. Faz Bear is there, looking right at you and slowly opening its mouth, seemingly struggling to move. And then, he jumps with a loud screeching scream right at you.
The Baby
Resident Evil Village
The old orphanage is being bought, but it’s your job to scope it out. You had to stop during the night, as you had just finished up with a client, and that took longer than scheduled. Just wanting to go home and get some sleep, you breathe a sigh of relief that this is your last stop for the data. Flashlight in hand, you enter to inspect the place. The beds and toys are still in their room. You feel an unsettling feeling wash over you as you keep exploring and finding items like dolls, letters, and photographs. Just when it looks like you’re done, you hear a faint sound coming from the main hallway. It’s what you feared: homeless people may have made a home of the place. You slowly approach and realize this sound sounds like a baby’s cry. You begin to walk forward slowly, but your flashlight struggles and eventually dies out. Just as you try to see if you can get it to work a little longer, you hear the sounds of something running towards you. The flashlight suddenly works again, and you lift it up. There in front, just a couple steps away, is a mass of a giant baby, or at least it seems to be a baby, maybe a burned or mutated baby. It grabs your feet, crying and wailing. It’s too late to scream as it begins to swallow you feet first.
Dead Hand
The Legend of Zelda
You’ve been tasked to go on an adventure to help save the world of Hyrule. The princess has told you to investigate the mysterious ruins hidden in the local town’s graveyard. You find yourself underneath after discovering one of the tombstones is hiding a secret tunnel. You know this is where you will find that one weapon to help you on your journey. After fighting off some aggressive bats, you see the end of the tunnel and the chest that awaits you. Just as you reach to open it, a bone-chilling scream fills the room. You go to cover your ears, but you can’t. You’re now paralyzed. You can’t move any part of your body except your eyes. The eyes move and see a pale being with long arms slowly going towards you. You can’t tell if it’s crawling or floating, but it’s coming right at you. Suddenly, you can feel your body functions return, and you begin running back to the tunnel entrance. Just before you reach it, that scream happens again. You’re paralyzed - again. The Dead Hand is right behind you, arms stretched out.
Humans
The Last of Us
What’s the scariest and most dangerous you could run into? Is it the zombie-like beings that used to be your fellow humans but are now taken over by a parasitic fungus? From walkers to runners to big bulky ones that explode. Yeah, they’re going to be a problem. In reality, they are what I would rather bump into. The worst-case scenario is finding another person. Not an infected person, but a completely normal human. Can you trust them? Maybe they’ll act friendly to get what they want. Perhaps they belong to a crazy cult that believes God has chosen them to cleanse the world of evil. Maybe they mean well but will give you up or sacrifice you to save their skin. Maybe they’ll immediately take their shotgun out and blast you dead rather than take their chances. No matter what, you can’t blink around them. Even the ones that care for us won’t be trustworthy. Humans are the scariest of them all. They can deceive, hurt, and control you. Humans are the worst thing you can run into, especially in a world with no order or rules.
Nice list!
