I did a list of my most anticipated games of 2024 when the year began, but that had strict rules on what I could include. Games had to have an officially announced release date. This time around, I’m making a list based on games that have been announced, period. I don’t care if it’s in question or what. If they showed a logo, at the very least, it’s in. So here we go.
10 - The Plucky Squire
From the moment I saw this game, my hype meter was up. Everything about it looks charming, and this could be one of those games that come out of nowhere and steal your heart. The delays have only made my hype go higher as I await to get my hands on it. I expect big things out of this small title.
9 - Grand Theft Auto VI
I’m not usually huge on Grand Theft Auto. My history with the games is doing some destruction and story missions, but ultimately getting out of it. However, that changed with the fifth installment. I fell in love with that game, especially with San Andreas's new, more modern version. Even if you don’t stick to the story, there is so much to do, and you could get lost. I expect the same with this one, and the fact that it’s a new modern version of Vice City and is going all in on the Florida man vibes works for me as a resident of said state. I’m also interested in seeing how Rockstar adapts the series to the more modern terms of gaming today.
8 - Hollow Knight: Silksong
Even though some things frustrated me, I had a blast with Hollow Knight, an interesting mix of Metroidvania with Soulslike difficulty. So naturally, I am hyped for the sequel Silksong. That being said, the many delays are threatening to kill off my hype. If you had asked me a year ago, this would have been in the top 3, but now I have it at number 8. Still, I really want to play this and hope we get a clear release date soon.
7 - Blade
Even though we know nothing about this game and shouldn’t expect it anytime soon, I think this will be a banger for Xbox. I always liked Blade and am happy to see the character get a full-blown AAA game. That being said, I have a history of not loving Arkane as much as others, but I am willing to give them a chance to deliver on what this could be.
6 - Dragon Age IV: Dreadwolf
I have never played a Dragon Age game. When Bioware announced they were working on a new one, I decided to make it the one where I finally ended it. So, I’m waiting patiently for this one, and I’ve kept up with the small updates they’ve given us. I know this won’t scratch the Mass Effect itch per se, as it's a different setting, but I think it could be a really solid gaming experience.
5 - South of Midnight
Everything about this concept screams to me. A game with an interesting art direction that takes place in the American Deep South with horror elements and magic? Sign me up. While we have a teaser trailer, the concept sounds so cool. Compulsion Games has a mixed record, but since this is the first game they made with all that Xbox/Microsoft funding, I’m expecting a banger and a possible breakthrough success for the studio.
4 - Avowed
It's not a shocker for anyone who has followed me for a while, but I am super hyped about this game. I want that Elder Scrolls-type experience, but since Part 6 is really far away and Starfield’s weakest parts have me questioning Todd Howard, Avowed should be what the doctor ordered. Whenever they show this game, I come away more intrigued by it. I think this could be a GOTY contender for Xbox this year.
3 - Fable
Fable on the original Xbox is my favorite game for that console. Unfortunately, I only dabbled with the sequels, so I was all in when they announced the franchise's return. The summer 2023 showing sold me, and I know I need this game. What’s even more exciting is that there’s still a lot to see, and I have a feeling the more they show later, the more my hype level will grow.
2 - Mass Effect 5
One of my greatest video game experiences was marathoning Mass Effects 1-3 in the 2013 holiday when I got the trilogy collection on my PS3. I know this isn’t just me, as the Mass Effect games are revered as great pieces of storytelling and character arcs done right in a video game series. Andromeda wasn’t as good, but I’m one of the few who liked it slightly better than many critics and gamers. So when Bioware announced they were returning to the drawing board, my excitement was there. I really hope they bring back the feeling of the originals with this one. If they get this right, this could be another incredible experience to add to the series.
1 - Metroid Prime
Metroid is my favorite video game franchise of all time. So it only makes sense that the highly anticipated fourth installment to the Prime variant of the series is my most anticipated game. Announced back in 2017, only to restart production from scratch in 2019 - Metroid Prime 4 is a game we know is coming but have no idea when. If not this year, I’m crossing my fingers, possibly as a launch window title for the expected Switch successor. While Metroid Dread filled a long-time itch to get back under the visor of Samus Aran, it’s Prime 4 that I’m most waiting for.
