I feel like console gaming has become so expensive over the years that PC is becoming an increasingly enticing alternative especially with the way steam has done family game sharing now.
For me at the moment I agree that 600 USD is probably the cut off for me unless it's a handheld because at least in that scenario I have different use cases for a device like that.
I think we’re headed towards towards consoles becoming expensive enthusiasts boxes and the handhelds (especially the ones that will be dockable) are going to be what consoles were to us growing up for the kids of today because they’ll be cheaper and the younger generation is used to mobile.
Yeah, hope that's not the case but that's where it seems to be heading when Sony is trying to be Apple and be the "premium brand" and Xbox looks to be more like a PC. Nintendo will probably be the only traditional platform in the end because they can
Interested to see how this trend of 'luxury gaming' pans out, and whether it just leads more to PC gaming. As a lifer console gamer, its certainly making me think about it!
Digital Foundry pretty much exists to cater to people that are focused on a game's visual fidelity. Where you stand etcetera.
As to consoles...I think the bigger issue is that the main reason for the things, simplicity and a unified platform, are rapidly going away. Nobody can seriously use that "lmao PC video driver issues" thing after a PS5 firmware patch blew up FF16 a few days ago, and the Xbox Series S made it impossible for developers to target a specific platform with specific capabilities.
The solution to that could have been to go with the PS5, but that's out the window now, too. The Pro is either going to be the target or an afterthought, which will leave players disappointed no matter what you do.
The only thing that really makes PC unsuitable is how laughably terrible most laptops are for gaming, and (more importantly) how Apple utterly despises games as a medium. If either of those things change, then it's a whole new ball game, and that's not even getting into Nintendo.

I've been wondering this myself.

I'd rather they focus on making great games - graphics will always be secondary to a great experience. Design is king!
