I recommend trying Balatro, then it might click with you why it was nominated (also more generally, good practice to play a game before forming an opinion on it).

It doesn’t have a story, but it’s fun, deep, and well designed; as a game, it works really well. And ultimately, that’s what it’s all about, right?

I do agree that it actually winning is a bit of a long shot, though.

I caught up on this today and I was a bit shocked at the Elden ring DLC being part of it. I haven’t played any of the games in the list but feel like I’d be happiest for Astro Bot to win. A solid fun platformer deserves attention and I feel like life has been missing a bit of fun and I think of fun and light hearted ness when I think of Astro bot and what I know of it

Astro Bot seems to have been riding a wave of goodwill since September, it's only contender is in Metaphor: ReFantazio due to its recency and resonance. Erdtree is more of a gesture, I doubt the jury would award it after already giving Elden Ring a GOTY. Balatro is the joker of the deck, it could challenge the major commercial titles with its single-dev narrative and technical wizardry. Rebirth is a triumph, though since it's the middle chapter of a trilogy, voters will wait for its conclusion to reward the entire project. Wukong could challenge: that it was previously overlooked before earning a nomination in GOTY and Direction indicates internal enthusiasm. I dare say the fan vote will be dominated by the Chinese delegation for it, too. It's a fun time of the year!
